Kate and David’s wedding at Notley Abbey in Buckinghamshire was something quite special. From the very beginning the couple had set out to create a day that would give their transatlantic guests a true flavour of England on their wedding day. We were there to capture it all and create this beautiful Notley abbey wedding video
a quaint quintessentially British wedding venue
The quaint English Abbey provided the perfect backdrop for this romantic celebration. Notley Abbey is an incredibly English venue and is steeped in history. It was originally built in the 12th century as a monastery then it became a private home in the 16th century. If you look carefully you can still find evidence of Notley Abbey’s history hidden in it’s architecture. As if a medieval monestary wasn’t English enough for you… It was once owned by Royalty!… well acting royalty at least. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh purchased the Abbey in 1944 when their home got bombed in the Blitz! All of this makes Notley Abbey one of our favourite Buckinghamshire wedding venues.
Americans in the Abbey
Team bride were composed of Kate’s childhood and University friends from the States. They spent a very relaxed morning getting ready, reminiscing about old times and getting excited for the big day ahead. Despite sporadic rain and brollys on standby throughout the morning, spirits were high and everyone was looking forward to the ceremony which would happen in the great stone hall.
The ceremony itself was nothing short of magical, with the stunning architecture of the Abbey providing a dramatic setting for the happy couple to exchange their vows. But Kate and David were technically already married. This meant that they could have a couple of their friends officiate proceedings. This always makes me happy to see. Having a friend as your celebrant always makes for a more intimate and personal wedding ceremony.

The guests enjoyed canapes and drinks (a transatlantic pairing of English Pimms with American Ales) and some croquet on the lawn. Then they were treated to a beautiful musical moment. As everyone flooded back into the main hall for their wedding breakfast Kate approached the baby grand piano. She gave us a sparkling rendition of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. It was a touching moment, especially since Kate sings the song to their young son as a lullaby. Cue lighters in the air, a good ‘ol fashioned sing along… and not a dry eye in the house.
The musical entertainment continued with a surprise bridal party musical number. This included songs from Hamilton and Mama Mia (to name but a few), re-written to be about the bride and groom. It was a fun and memorable way to celebrate the happy couple, and everyone in attendance couldn’t help but fall about laughing… or attempting to sing along. It helps when one of your Brides-people writes musicals for a living 🙂
Party in the great hall
As the night continued, the party truly began. The incredible band, The Black Hat Band, absolutely killed it a dance floor that was filled from beginning to end. I’m sorry to say though that it was mostly the American continent showing us stuck up brits how to do it :-p The energy in the room was electric, especially when a couple of the wedding guests appeared as guest singers for the band.! It was clear that everyone was having the time of their lives rocking the halls of Notley abbey.

Looking back on the day, it’s clear that Kate and David’s Notley Abbey wedding was a celebration that perfectly blended English and American culture, creating a unique and unforgettable experience for all involved.
